I have always loved nature. Having said that, I can also say I don’t feel that nature has affected my life very much especially when I was younger. I don’t spend as much time outside now as I did when I was younger, but I believe that I appreciate nature more, therefore enjoy it more. Annual family trips to Michigan and various sports in the spring, summer and fall are what I think are the largest contributors to the increase appreciation of nature.
My grandparents’ own a cabin in Houghton Lake, Michigan and we go there and spend a week or two each summer. The cabin sits on the edge of the lake nestled by trees. I have always loved going there because it is an escape from the city. Though I haven’t been camping, I enjoy the quietness of being surrounded by nature with all the comfort and conveniences of the cabin.
While at the cabin, I don’t spend much time indoors as I normally do at home. At home, I usually sit in my room playing video games, but not when I am in Michigan, because there is so much more outdoors to experience. It is while on vacation in Michigan that I feel I was truly introduced to the game of golf. When I was first learning to play, I would become annoyed because I wasn’t very good. As my skills improved, I fell in love with the game. Being outside surrounded by beautiful surroundings of the golf course, I found it to be very calming and enjoyable.
My family also occasionally travels to Florida in which we stay in places on the beach. I remember going out on the water and seeing dolphins and manatee. Nothing like you’d see in Springfield, Ohio. I find this type of nature to be calming and serine. I have to remind myself that just because it is not green, doesn’t mean that it is not part of nature. Anytime I can be around water, I enjoy the calming effect and how it makes life feel so uncomplicated.
As I have grown older, I feel as though my appreciation for nature develops. Even in certain video game environments, I feel the desire to explore and visit new places. I will even stop at times to look at the scenery in the game and take in as many details and information about its natural environment. Although being in virtual nature of a video game is not the same as the real thing, it has contributed to a stronger desire to visit places that feature the great outdoors.
Because I find nature to be calming, I realize now that a walk can be enjoyable even though it is just a simple task. As I spend more time in nature, I am learning to appreciate it and not take it for granite. I don’t think that I would like to live in the woods or even camp for an extended period of time since this was not part of my growing up, but I feel I am more open to the experience and learning from those who are more passionate for such things. I can say that I do love nature, just in small doses.
